Looking for a few hints and tips on how to whittle your choice down when choosing a new stone kitchen worktop? It’s no surprise – the options are endless, and that can make your decision so much harder! Never fear however, here are ten tips which will come in very handy indeed when you look to choose your new worktop, a la natural stone!
Tip 1 – If you’re a keen baker, go for marble. Marble has a naturally cool temperature which is perfect for baking, especially pastry work.
Tip 2 – If you have children or anyone in your home who has a low immune system, quartz is super-hygienic. Quartz is non-porous and as a result it doesn’t harbour germs or bacteria.
Tip 3 – If you are low on time for maintenance, again, go for quartz. Quartz doesn’t require any maintenance, whereas marble and granite do.
Tip 4 – Shop around to find the best deals. Online you will find some great deals, but if you shop locally you may also find a few bargains too. Also check out traditional sale times for some cost busting deals, such as New Year or Black Friday, for example.
Tip 5 – Check out colours in person. It’s always a good idea to head a showroom to check out your shortlist of colours, because the actual tone and warmth of the colour can be changed by both natural and artificial light. Check it out in person and you won’t get any surprises.
Tip 6 – Don’t shy away from white. Many people are a little scared of going all white because of the extra cleaning time needed, but the bottom line is that white looks fantastic and is ultra-fashionable, whilst also matching with every other colour imaginable.
Tip 7 – Weigh up the pros and cons of each material. Don’t just jump in with a choice without really knowing about it in detail. Check out the pros and cons of granite, marble, and quartz in detail, and then make your decision based on what you have learnt.
Tip 8 – Don’t assume that marble is fragile. Many people decide not to go with marble without really understanding the facts, and simply listening to the myth that this natural stone is fragile. This is certainly not the case, because we are talking about a stone that has been used for centuries and has been mined from the earth!
Tip 9 – Avoid unusual fashionable colours. Unless the colour we are talking about is neutral, avoid on-trend colours which are unusual. This is because when you come to redecorate your kitchen in a couple of years’ time, you may find that your worktop doesn’t ‘go’ with what you have planned, and you’ll then have to replace everything, making it a costly and time-consuming process. Instead, stick to a colour and pattern that will survive several redecorations.
Tip 10 – Take your time! Don’t jump into a decision, make sure you really dedicate time to getting your worktop decision correct.
As you can see, there is a lot to take in when it comes to choosing the right kitchen worktop for you, and where natural stones are concerned, your choices are quite extensive. Shop around, take your time, and make sure you do your research, when you do this, you really cover all bases.
